The Student 2 Business event has been a great success. Thanks to the joint organisers by Singapore Polytechnic Infocomm Club and Microsoft Singapore, over 130 tech-enthusiasts attended the event.
Steven Li and Chia Lin sparked off the presentation with a high note, DreamSpark, believing that the $10,000 worth of Microsoft software can allow every student to develop their interest or potential in IT to the fullest.
DreamSpark gives access to all the fully licensed software to the students. By default, all SP students are granted access to the free software and may log in using their SP's ichat account.
To help students learn the software, the TechNet Virtual Labs and the beneficial Microsoft Student Partners programme are available to students holding a Windows Live ID. An MSP bears a commitment and passion to share their technical knowledge through online and offline interaction with the community. In addition to those expectations, monthly meetings are organised for the MSPs and MSPs have opportunites to interact with the Microsoft professionals directly.
If you're looking to apply for an internship in the Microsoft community, check it out at the Microsoft Students to Business Portal and you might even give your career a head start.
Cheers,
Ren Sen
On 26 March 2009, we and the SP Rotaract Club carried out a CSSC PC maintenance activity.
We met near SAC at 2.30pm and helped loading all the bulky IBM desktops up to the van. We then made way to CSSC.
The bulky desktops were then deposited into the main room while the old ones were moved to a temporary one. Since certain parts were still active, we decided to savage whatever still useful and gave them a new purpose in new bodies. While the guys were busy doing all the transfers, Fahmi and Jit king transported some desktops back to our club room for storage and (hopefully) future plans.
After wrestling with them computers, we gave them a clean format of windows xp and some freeware like openoffice useful for the children.
Below are the photos we took during all the action!

SPIC was invited to the "IBM: Simple Solutions in Tough Times Workshop" on 19th March. The workshop was to showcase IBM Technologies and affiliates to help reduce running costs, improve efficiency and growth of Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) during the current economic climate.
The event started off with Mr. Peter Leong, the centre director of SME Infocomm Resource Centre (SIRC) showcasing innovative ways to increase business viability and what centres in Singapore can help, particularly SIRC.
Next up, there was a run through on how the Internet can aid in business and how Web 2.0 had changed the internet experience. Business can take leverage on the power of Web 2.0 to improve growth and attract customers by using IBM Lotus Suites.
After the intresting overview of Web 2.0, we were introduced on moving over a paperless working enviroment to cut cost, increase productibility vis collobration, sharing, searching and e.t.c. using existing technlogies such as a SharePoint(Microsoft) Server and IBM Technlogies. We were also give a run thru of Cognos Software from IBM, and how it can improve growth by pinpointing weak points in your business and can generate reports literally on the fly with the data feeded into it, unlike spreadsheets where employees have to painstakinly enter and compile which may contain calculation or human errors.
After the coffee-break, IBM showcased their Technnlogies on how to cut Data Centre (Servers) cost by using their space effecient server with built in cooling which can be use in any enviroment (not creative Zii). They also showed us another alternative for SMEs with existing server, which may be difficult to replace as these arn't cheap. This was a liquid cooling device attached to the exaust of the servers to almost remove all heat away from the server. These two technologies help reduce hot spots and thus reduce running costs.

Last of all, we were introduced to two softwares, namely SAP and SUGARcrm. SAP can help reduce costs and outperforming competitors by putting the customer in the center and linking all the departments in an enterprise to form a cohesive enviroment which is similar t0 IBM's Cognos Software. SUGARcrm is a opensource (3 editions, onlly community edition is free) Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software which can improve relation ship between customers and enterprises to improve sales.

Gaming Convention Asia(GCA) Student's Day Write Up
It was an aweome day at GCA 2008. The event started off with Prof Henry Jenkins II from MIT, who gave an interesting talk about the past and the future of gaming. His talk was extremely entertaining; filled with pictures of games from the past and present which everyone in the room could relate to. No words on his slides; just pictures!
