Hack in the box capture the flag special report

logo

Here is a special report written by HITB guys for the ctf-wmd competition last year

https://www.hackinthebox.org/misc/HITB-CTF2009-Special-Report.pdf

Team AllKill did not change their default passwords and an attacking team had logged in, stolen their flags and had been messing around with their virtual image. Luckily for them, they had made backups of their image but the downside was they were losing points.

Haha. The one behind this is done by my team (Terminators). But sadly the flag we stolen were  decoy and not the real one =( but still we screw their vm =x

Symantec got compromised

logo

Well. Symantec  got their website compromise by simple blind SQL injection. The end result is other databases got exposed and attacker able to walk around on the server. The other interesting note is that, the password stored, is not encrypted or hashed. It is in clear plain text.

(For those who aren't familiar with web application. Usually people doesn't store your password in their database. They usually store the hash of your password. So every time you login, you password will be hashed and validate with the one in database ).

If I am not wrong, previously, quite a few security vendor website also got compromise using SQL injection.

So this show that no one can really be invulnerable from the harsh internet environment. Read the link for more information on the attack but I don't advise anyone to try it on any live server unless it is your own server.

Our new toy, Apple G5

logo

Well. Recently, I entered club and saw a big machine on the table. It was an apple G5. After the inital wow and hoo, I opened the casing to take a look what is inside.

When I took out the cover, I realize the cover was really solid and quite heavy duty. And the cover has some rubber strip like those you find in air-tight container. I will explain what I believe this is for in the later part of this post.

Taking a looking inside, this is what it is.If you look clearly, there is an acrylic cover with an curve depression in the center of the acrylic. So why there is a curve? If you notice carefully, there is 2 fan in the front. The curve acrylic cover is to ensure that all wind from the fan go to the heat and not escape by the small hole (if without the curve part, there will be hole).

There is also 1 big heat sink as this machine contain 2 power pc processor.

I know the following picture is pretty blur, but the picture actually show the 8 ram slot in this machine. I repeat 8 ram slot.

My final words: I am very impressed with Apple. This machine is launched at 2003 yet till today, it is still impressive. Apple G5 has a marvelous hardware designed. It is engineered after many thought and in-dept thinking. It look at the every single small details and try to make it perfect. That explain why this casing design still existing in today's Mac Pro.

PS: Photo may be blur as it was taken with my handphone camera as I did not bring my digital camera.
