During a presentation at the Mobile World Congress, Intel and Nokia announced that they are bringing together their respective Linux-based operating systems under a single banner.

The combined platform, called MeeGo, supports multiple architectures and will be suitable for use across a wide range of mobile and embedded form factors, including netbooks and smartphones.

Nokia's Maemo platform evolved from the company's experiments with handheld tablet computing. It has shipped on all of the company's Internet tablets (Nxxx Series) as well as the N900, a high-end smartphone that Nokia launched last year. Intel's Moblin platform, which is principally designed for netbooks, is backed by a number of prominent Linux distributors and hardware vendors. Although there are a number of significant technical differences between the two platforms, they have a lot in common.

New Laptops with Synpatics touchpad released late last year débuted with either multi-touch or partial gesture support such as ChiralMotion, two-finger scroll & pinch zoom. Some lucky users with older hardware was able to update the driver to get these features while some needed a hacked driver (no supported on Win64 as the signatures were destroyed).

But ALL Synaptics touchpads support multi-touch such as two-finger scroll. Here's a tip on how to get that. First install, Scrybe by Synaptics to get gesture support. If two-finger scroll isn't enabled, even in the touchpad settings, go on to get a resident app to unlock the two-finger scroll.

2010 started with a bang, well the Norton team over at Symantec were presented with a nice New Year Present. The Norton 2010 products received the title of ‘Best Products of 2009’ by independent test organisation AV-Comparatives

“Due to the big improvements achieved by Symantec, and the various good scores it reached in most of our tests during 2009, Symantec was awarded Best Product of the Year 2009.”

- AV-Comparatives, Anti-Virus Comparative Summary Report 2009 – December 2009

The Anti-Virus Comparative Summary Report is an annual year-end report by AV-Comparatives, which summarises the result of extensive tests among high-quality Anti-Virus products such as Norton by Symantec, Kaspersky and McAfee. Overall, Norton almost topped the whole test with a few exceptions.

After various rounds of rigorous testing on the products which include Malware Detection tests, Scanning Speed tests and Dynamic Protection tests, Symantec emerged the overall winner of 2009.

If you had bad experience with pre-2007 Norton Products (especially 2006), it's time you give Norton 2010 a try, it installs under 1min, tough security while being lightweight and fast.

Stantum's technology has made it possible to have Multi-touch on resistive devices, meaning added stylus support for accuracy.

Stantum's technology is a software-based refinement to resistive touchscreens that allows for accuracy beyond the pixel density of the display, a complete lack of touchscreen "jitters" and some fairly incredible input methods. Termed "TouchPark," the multitouch framework provides gesture recognition, cursor management and physics processing for phone builders to stick on top of the phone OS (Symbian, Windows Mobile and Android are currently supported), and works with hardware such as Texas Instruments Zoom, Freescale i.MX and ST Nomadic.

This is a hardware implementation and it will not be possible to run it on existing resitive devices but there is an software implementation but it is still in it early stages and doesn't look promising.

Google, the company that made searching on the web synonymous with it's brand, the company behind gmail and android.
They seem to be expanding into an increasing number of markets daily. With the last couple of weeks busy, with many announcements made. Today, another was made, regarding its new & free URL shortening service, goo.gl, for use within its other products.

URL shorteners are great for services like Twitter, where characters are counted in posts, or for when a fully-sized link would look rather out of place. There tons of alternatives to choose from, but at the moment, there are only a few very popular ones (such as bit.ly). Google's new offering is only available through its own products, according to the blog post on the subject, but it comes with a few benefits, listed below.

Stability: Google's scalable, multi-datacenter infrastructure provides great uptime and a reliable service to our users.

Security: As we do with web search, shortened URLs are automatically checked to detect sites that may be malicious and warn users when the short URL resolves to such sites.

Speed: At Google we like fast products and we've worked hard to ensure this service is quick. We'll continue to iterate and improve the speed of Google Url Shortener.

The proper link for the site, goo.gl, has nothing much to offer (as the service is limited to a couple products), but you can test out the Google URL Shortener (the official name) by using the Google Toolbar or FeedBurner.
